Basketball Australia Seeking Centre of Excellence Women’s Coach

Basketball Australia is calling for applications from suitably qualified people for the position of Head Coach of the BA Centre of Excellence Women’s Program. This position is full- time and is located on the campus of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, ACT.

Basketball Australia is the governing and controlling body for the sport of basketball in Australia and is located in Wantirna South, Victoria.
BA runs the Chemist Warehouse WNBL, NWBL, WNWBL, national teams and national junior championships.
The Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence is located at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and is a fully residential program for identified elite youth players aged 16 – 19 years.

About the Program

The Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Women’s program has a proud history of developing elite young talent in a full-residential, holistic high-performance environment.

The program has 12 scholarship athletes aged 16-19 years who are supported by coaching staff, sports science and sports medicine experts, along with academic and wellbeing staff.

Athletes are engaged in study and undertake an intensive daily training environment, which is includes basketball skill, concept and competitive development, as well as strength and conditioning training and athletic development.

The Centre of Excellence program plays a significant role in the development of international players for Australian teams at both the junior and senior level, with a focus on developing athletes for the National senior team, the Australian Opals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Head Coach of the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Women’s program will be responsible for:

  • Leading the preparation, planning and conduct of technical preparation and holistic athlete development program
  • Driving a best practice, elite daily training environment for identified emerging athletes aged 16-19 years
  • Leading all on-court coaching, including individual and small group sessions and all squad practices
  • Oversight in the creation and monitoring of Individual Performance Plans (IPP) for scholarship athletes
  • Liaison with key stakeholders with talent identification and selection of scholarship athletes
  • Coaching for all COE Women’s games, including league play and tours
  • Liaison with and management of Australian Institute of Sport
  • Leadership in the supervision and pastoral care of the scholarship holders
  • Reporting, compliance management and administrative tasks as prescribed by Basketball Australia

Desired Experience and skill set

  • Demonstrated experience coaching elite youth basketball
  • Coaching experience at international level
  • Experience in coaching at the NBL/WNBL or NBL1 level
  • Head coaching experience at Australian Junior Championships
  • Understanding of the Basketball Australia style of play philosophy and elite youth development structure
  • Understanding of the international game and best practice player development strategies
  • Actively coaching in the BA NPP or State Performance Programs
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches and sports science and athlete services staff
  • Basketball Australia Association Coach accreditation
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in sports coaching
  • Current Working with Children (or equivalent) clearance

Remuneration and conditions

This full-time role consists of a 38-hour working week, with an expectation of weekend and outside of hours commitments as required.

An attractive salary and benefits package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.The successful applicant will be required to travel in the role and all agreed business-related travel expenses will be covered by the Federation.

The successful candidate will be required to have a current Working with Children clearance or equivalent and hold a minimum Basketball Australia Association Coach level accreditation.
