Emerging Coach Initiative

Basketball Australia is launching a new initiative to develop identified young coaches of potential and provide ongoing professional development opportunities.

The Basketball Australia Emerging Coach Initiative has been devised to provide identified coaches aged 22-35 years with professional development, training and opportunities for mentoring.
The one-year program will include a raft of development, experiential learning and mentoring with a focus on developing identified young coaches and building depth in the pathway.

To be coordinated by the Basketball Australia Director of High-Performance Coach Development, the program will include input and leadership from industry and academic professionals to ensure it is a holistic growth opportunity for the participants.

Coaches in the program will also receive a series of formal qualifications, including –

  • Basketball Australia Performance Coach accreditation
  • Basketball Australia Coach Developer accreditation
  • SportsCode/Hudl Level Two certification

Who is the program for? –

To be eligible for the program, coaches must be between the ages of 22 and 35 at the time of application.

Applicants for the inaugural program must meet at least TWO of the following criteria for consideration by the selection panel –

  • Currently coaching in the National Performance Program or State Performance Program (or state equivalent) as a network coach
  • Experience coaching at an Australian Junior Championship at Under 16, 18 or 20 level (head or assistant coach)
  • Head Coach experience at NBL1 or equivalent state league level
  • Experience as an assistant coach at NBL or WNBL level
  • Current Basketball Australia Association Coach accreditation

Program structure –

The program will be delivered primarily on-line and via remote learning, with some face to face touchpoints during the 12-month duration.

Commencing August 1, 2020, the delivery format will include –

  • Monthly on-line webinars
  • Individual meeting with program coordinator to devise Individual Development Plan (IDP)
  • Attendance at a Basketball Australia Development Camp or junior national team camp
  • Mentoring session in home city
  • Review of team practice session and game
  • BA Performance Coach accreditation
  • Basketball Australia Coach Developer accreditation
  • SportsCode/Hudl Level Two certification

Application and selection process –

  • Expressions of Interest will be called in June 2020 and promoted through the Basketball Australia web-site and high performance network
  • Candidates will be required to submit a written application, including cover letter and a coaching resume of no more than 3 pages
  • All Expressions of Interests will be considered by the review and selection committee, which will consist of –
    • BA Director of High Performance Coach Development
    • A Basketball Australia “Master Coach”
    • State or Territory High Performance Manager
    • Independent panel member
  • Expressions of Interest close 4pm Friday, July 10 and should be submitted via e-mail to Peter.lonergan@australia.basketball
  • A maximum of 25 coaches will be accepted into the program and the intention is to have representation from each state and territory

Program cost –

The Basketball Australia Emerging Coach Initiative will cost successful applicants $650, which is inclusive of the various accreditations, as well as travel to a designated BA Development or Junior National Team camp.

Successful applicants will be invoiced once the selections have been finalised.
