Emerging Coach Initiative 2023 Program

Basketball Australia is calling for expressions of interest from suitably qualified coaches for the next intake of the Emerging Coach Initiative. This program is designed to provide young coaches with some intensive professional development, mentoring and build capacity.

Introduction –

The Basketball Australia Emerging Coach Initiative has been devised to provide identified coaches aged 20-36 years with professional development, training and opportunities for mentoring.
The one-year program will include a raft of development, experiential learning and mentoring with a focus on developing identified young coaches and building depth in the pathway.

To be coordinated by the Basketball Australia Director of High-Performance Coach Development, the program will include input and leadership from industry and academic professionals to ensure it is a holistic growth opportunity for the participants.

Coaches in the program will also receive a formal qualifications, including –

  • Basketball Australia Performance Coach accreditation
  • Basketball Australia Coach Developer accreditation

Who is the program for? –

To be eligible for the program, coaches must be between the ages of 20 and 36 at the time of application.

Applicants for the inaugural program must meet at least TWO of the following criteria for consideration by the selection panel –

  • Currently coaching in the National Performance Program or State Performance Program (or state equivalent) as a network coach
  • Experience coaching at an Australian Junior Championship at Under 16, 18 or 20 level (head or assistant coach)
  • Head Coach experience at NBL1 or equivalent state league level
  • Experience as an assistant coach at NBL or WNBL level
  • Working in a development officer or Director of Coaching role at an association
  • Current Basketball Australia Association Coach accreditation

Program structure – 

The program will be delivered primarily on-line and via remote learning, with some face to face touchpoints during the 12-month duration.

Commencing March 15, 2023 and running for one year, the delivery format will include –

  • Monthly on-line webinars
  • Individual meeting with program coordinator to devise Individual Development Plan (IDP)
  • Mentoring session in home city
  • Review of team practice session and game
  • BA Performance Coach accreditation
  • Basketball Australia Coach Developer accreditation

Program Delivery Method –

Monthly on-line webinars via Zoom, featuring guest presenters

Assigned tasks and assessments using the TedEd learning management system

On-line delivery of Performance Coach core components

Expressions of Interest – 

Interested coaches should express interest in the first instance via e-mail to peter.lonergan@australia.basketball outlining

  • Name
  • Association/club/school
  • Current BA coach accreditation level
  • One-page coaching resume

Expressions of interest will be reviewed by a selection panel and a maximum of 25 coaches will be offered positions in the 2023 Emerging Coach Initiative program. Expressions of interest will close Wednesday, March 1 and no late EOI’s will be accepted.

The program will commence with induction on Wednesday, March 15.
