Posted on May 12 2023

Australia has a proud tradition of success in international youth tournaments and benchmark events and is pleased to announce the panel of coaches who will lead our teams in the 2023 international season.

The Australian Under 19 Women (the Gems) will contest the 2023 FIBA Under 19 World Cup in Madrid in July, looking to go one better than the silver medals the team won in the 2019 and 2021 events.

Experienced coach David Herbert will be at the helm of the Gems, after successfully guiding the team to silver in Hungary in 2021. Herbert is currently the head coach of the BA Centre of Excellence Program and is a former WNBL Coach of the Year.

He will be assisted by Perth Wildcats assistant coach Keegan Crawford and Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach Zoe Carr.

Dual national championship gold medal coach Tom Garlepp will take the helm of the Australian Under 17 Women (the Sapphires) as the contest the 2023 FIBA Asia Under 16 Cup to be played in Jordan in July.

A veteran of 261 NBL games, Garlepp has made a seamless transition from elite player to coach, guiding the NSW Under 20 Women to two gold medals in four years and having great success at the NBL1 and school levels.

His assistants for the Asia Cup will be Sarah Graham from the BA Centre of Excellence and Nic Martin, who is the state head coach of the highly successful Basketball Tasmania High Performance Program.

Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach (Country) Nathan Cooper-Brown is the head coach of the Australian Under 17 Men as they prepare for the 2023 FIBA Asia Under 16 Cup to be played in Doha later in the year.

Cooper-Brown has been an assistant with the program for some seven years and has vast experience at the National Junior Championship and NBL1 level.

He will be assisted by Tasmania JackJumpers assistant coach Jack Fleming and BA Centre of Excellence assistant coach Ash Arnott.

Congratulations to all these coaches on their appointments.
