Posted on Oct 23 2023

The Queanbeyan Basketball Association in regional New South Wales recently hosted a coach development clinic with a focus on “playing at pace”. The clinic included skill and concept for the fast break and aspects to playing at pace

Thanks to Daniel Jenson and the QBA for hosting the clinic and the spirit of sharing of the video resource. Below are some takeaways from the clinic and the video.

  • “Pace is space” in the modern game
  • Keys for playing in the pace phase –o “Your spacing will be defined on how well you run the floor”
o Play North-South – efficiency of movement, eliminate side-ways movement o Forward pivots on early catches
o The “kick ahead” is king
o Sustained middle lane running – “the running post”
    o Hunt lay-ups
o ECR – elite corner running once evident no lay-up
  • Creating “high, wide and deep” spacing at the end of the break to allow for space continued attack
  • Cutting a key part of early offence – get more cuts to the front of the rim than your opponent

Every coach will say they want to run, but will they invest?

  • Appropriate practice time
  •  Commitment to conditioning – Coach Smith/Coach Williams o Patience to the process
  • Energy to maintain the demands of a running system
