FIBA Women’s World Cup Coaches Clinic

FIBA Hall of Fame coaches Jan Stirling and Tom Maher will headline a free clinic for coaches in Sydney on Saturday, October 1 presented by FIBA as part of a huge fortnight of basketball in the Harbour City.

Stirling and Maher will join elite international youth coaches Dee Butler and Kristen Veal in presenting clinics as part of the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Sydney September 22 to October 1.

The FIBA Women’s World Cup Coaches Clinic will be held at the Hall of Legends at the Quay Centre in Sydney Olympic Park 9am – 12noon on Saturday, October 1 and is open to all coaches, with a special invitation to female coaches and coaches that are coaching female teams.

The four elite presenters will cover a wide range of skills and concepts in the clinic and provide attending coaches with detail on drill structure, skill development, teaching points and concepts across three hours of on-court presentations.

About the presenters – 

Jan Stirling is  WNBL Life Member and FIBA Hall of Fame inductee after a stellar coaching career at both the domestic and international level. The former Adelaide Lightning mentor led the Opals to two Olympic Silver medals and a World Championship gold medal in Brazil in 2006.

Tom Maher has coached four different nations to Olympic Games, including claiming bronze (1996) and silver (2000) with the Opals. A multiple WNBL Coach of the Year and champion, Maher has led Australia, China, New Zealand and Great Britain as Olympic team head coach. Coach Maher is also a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Dee Butler is a WNBL Life Member, who made a successful transition to coaching after a stellar playing career. Butler led the Australian Under 19 Women to World Cup silver in 2019 and has enjoyed great success with junior state teams and in the NBL1 since taking up the whiteboard.

Kristen Veal recently took over the head coaching role with the UC Capitals after seven years guiding and developing elite juniors as Head Coach at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence.

Another WNBL Life Member, Veal has coached at the FIBA youth level and with the Emerging Opals at the World University Games.

This is a face-to-face clinic, all coaches must pre-register to attend. Parking will be available at paid public parking stations adjacent to the venue.
