National Coaches Conference Taking Shape

The 2024 Basketball Australia National Coaches Conference will be held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra May 27 and 28 with another exciting group of on-court presenters set to share their knowledge and expertise.

Headlined by internationally renowned skill development expert Joerik Michiels from Belgium, the on-court clinics will cover a wide range of skill, concept and tactical development, with the coaches sharing ideas on drills, teaching method and building competition.

Michiels is the founder of Elite Athletes Academy in Antwerp, Belgium is globally respected for his approach to skill development. He has worked with countless European professional players to build their overall skill package and has travelled the world presenting clinics and consulting on player development.

Newly appointed Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Women’s Program assistant coach Mel Downer will be another leading development coach to share her expertise, when she presents on “building your defensive transition system” as part of the Conference.

A former Australian Sapphires and New Zealand Tall Ferns assistant coach, Downer has coached at the professional level in New Zealand, as well as serving as an assistant coach for the Adelaide Lightning in the WNBL.

Adding to the list of on-court presenters is NBA Basketball School Australia Technical Director Nico Loureiro. Loureiro has worked in elite youth development in three continents and is internationally renowned for his player development approach and energetic coaching style.

Rounding out our first group of on-court clinicians is Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Men’s Program head coach Robbie McKinlay. McKinlay was an assistant coach on the recent Boomers Asia Cup qualifying series and is the current head coach of the Australian Under 19 Men’s team and he will present his favourite drills for running a competitive practice session as part of the Conference
