U18 Nationals Clinic – Robbie McKinlay Presents 1 v 1 Drills

As part of the recent Australian Under 18 National Championships in Brisbane, Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence Men’s Head Coach Robbie McKinlay presented a clinic on “daily drills to impact 2-way skill development”.

The current Australian Emus mentor presented a series of drills that coaches can incorporate into their practice sessions to improve offensive and defensive fundamentals and develop 1 v 1 skills. Here are some notes and associated video from the clinic.

Drill One – Elbow Rips (contested finishing)

  • Defence want to try get chest to chest. Initiate contact with chest (chest blow). Contest without fouling.
  • Offence – strong rip. 1 dribble. Eye on basket early. Initiate contact to create space. Play off two feet unless quick layup. Finish through contact.

Drill Two – Short corner Rips

  • Defence – early chest blow and try keep offence below backboard. Wall up and guard pivot. Contest without fouling.
  • Offence – early contact to create space. Get above backboard with contact. Can finish either side of basket. Eyes up early. Finish through contact.

Drill Three – Short close out Elbow 1v1.

  • Offence – attack to score. Read close out (attack middle or down the lane). 1 quick move off the bounce. Initiate contact to create space if needed. Eyes up early. Finish through contest or contact.
  • Defence – don’t want to give up middle. Call “BALL”. Chest blow and contest without fouling. If they try drive middle should be automatic chest blow/charge.

Drill Four – Augusta Seam 1v1

  • Defence starts at elbow and passes to offence in the seam outside 3.
  • Close out – 1. Call ball 2. Carry a hand 3. Foot angles.
  • Offence passes to coach in opposite seam. Defence “Nail” pointing man and ball.
  • Coach passes back to offence and play 1v1.
  • Defence should say “Ball, Nail, Ball”.
  • Defence – don’t give up nail (middle drive). Foot angles key. Build of from previous drills. Chest blows and contest without fouling.

Drill Five – DHO 1v1 – Side Pick and Roll

  • Put a chair on the 45
  • Offence will be in corner. Player with ball will DHO below the chair with offence in corner.
  • After DHO play 1v1.
  • Defence – want to push ball above elbow if possible. Make sure defence opens up to the ball (like going under SPR).
  • Offence – come off the DHO at speed. Read how defence is guarding. 4 dribble limit

 

Drill Six – ASU 1v1

  • Set up cones to extend from lane line all the way to half way.
  • Offence starts inside the jump circle at half way. Defence hands them the ball.
